A 17 Year Old 1994 Heavy Caroni balancing tar, rubber and petrol with ripe mango, cola and menthol over oak, tropically aged and bottled by Velier at a more approachable 52%.
Description
Caroni shut down in 2003, and Velier's bottlings of its rescued Trinidad casks set the benchmark for collectible, tropically aged rum. This release pours from the heavy 1994 vintage, matured 17 years in the Caribbean heat and bottled at 52%, a touch gentler than the full-proof Employees while keeping every classic marker.
Maturation in ex-bourbon oak under tropical conditions gives the archetypal industrial signature, rubber, varnish and tar over ripe mango on the nose, then leather, mango and spice across an oily palate with a dirty, savoury edge. Cola, menthol and oak fill out the body, and the finish stays on liquorice, tropical fruit and wood. The lower strength makes it noticeably more drinkable than its bigger brothers without thinning the character, an iconic 1994 profile that is both deeply dirty and unusually accessible for drinkers exploring heavy Caroni.
