Velier Uitvlugt ULR 1997

Uitvlugt was the consolidation hub of Guyana's heritage stills before they converged at Diamond, and this 1997 vintage comes off the four-column French Savalle still, the versatile metal column that gives the lightest, cleanest of the Demerara profiles. Velier aged it tropically in the Caribbean heat and bottled it undiluted at 59.7%, the unsweetened, full-proof, single-marque template that set the modern collector market.

Guyanese rum is molasses based, and its character is defined by which heritage still it came off. The Savalle column lacks the oily heft of the wooden pot stills, giving a brighter, more refined frame, here showing coconut, glue, vanilla and caramel on the nose, then sweet oak, spice and coconut on the palate, with caramel and marzipan trailing a long finish. Tropical ageing has concentrated it and folded the wood in seamlessly. Intense but remarkably composed, this is a benchmark Uitvlugt for drinkers who want bright, complex Demerara at cask strength.
