A Guatemalan solera blend from Botran built on cane honey rather than molasses, with caramel, vanilla, chocolate and coconut over wood, an approachable, not-too-sweet sipper at 40%.
Description
Botran's Reserva Solera 1893 comes from Industrias Licoreras de Guatemala and works from sugar cane honey, a column still rum assembled through a solera, the fractional system where older and younger spirit marry in cask. The 1893 on the label nods to the house rather than an age, so this is best read as a solera blend bottled at 40%.
The glass offers caramel, vanilla and a woody edge, with chocolate and coconut on the palate and a finish that turns woody and sugarcane-sweet, kept on the drier side for the style. It is soft and approachable, pleasant if not especially deep, with the gentle proof showing a little warmth. For drinkers exploring Guatemalan ron beyond the sweetest names, it is an easy, moderately sweet pour for relaxed sipping.
