An unusually polished Caroni from Velier, this 1996 keeps the distillery’s tar and rubber in the background while pushing coconut, vanilla pastry and old leather, a tropically aged Trinidad heavyweight bottled at full proof.
Description
Caroni closed in 2003, and the abandoned warehouses Luca Gargano found in Trinidad turned this state owned bulk producer into the most mythologised name in rum. Velier aged this 1996 vintage tropically and bottled it undiluted at 63.5%, a finite single distillery release of exactly the kind collectors chase, with nothing added beyond what came off the still and out of the ex-bourbon cask.
Most heavy Caroni leans into diesel, tar and burnt rubber, but this one is gentler and more integrated, the industrial signature kept to the background. The molasses spirit aged in the Caribbean heat shows coconut, vanilla and tropical fruit up front, then darker tones of tar, burnt sugar and caramel through a long warm finish, with old leather and menthol underneath. At cask strength it carries real power, so it rewards slow sipping and a little water for anyone meeting the famous heavy Trinidad style.
