A light, low strength Dominican ron from Ron Barcelo at 37.5%, this Gran Anejo offers soft toffee, butterscotch and young oak with a touch of grapefruit, an easy column-still mixer built for cola and simple drinks rather than neat sipping.
Description
Ron Barcelo is one of the Dominican Republic's big three houses, made here by Alcoholes Finos Dominicanos and labelled as a cane-juice Gran Anejo. Distilled on a column still and rested in ex-bourbon wood, it sits at the soft, accessible end of Spanish-style rum, where the spirit stays light and the wood does the shaping.
The nose shows oak, grapefruit and vanilla, the palate brings young wood, toffee, a bourbon thread and molasses, and the finish is oaky and spicy with caramel. Barcelo as a house tends to test on the drier side, though there is gentle sweetness in perception here, and at a modest 37.5% the body is light and the finish short. It is best understood as an affordable everyday mixer, at home with cola or in a simple long drink, rather than a bottle to study neat. On those terms it is pleasant, soft and easy going.
