A five year Martinique agricole at 42%, dry and woody with leather, tobacco, cinnamon and a grassy core, turning to chocolate, vanilla and coffee, more intense than its strength suggests, certified unsweetened.
Description
Saint James Cuvee 1765 is an aged AOC Martinique agricole from Saint James, one of the island's oldest and largest houses, distilling since 1765. Made from fresh-pressed cane juice and bottled at 42%, this five year old sits in the Vieux range, with a bit more age and spice than the entry expressions.
Distilled on a column still and matured in ex-bourbon oak, it leans dry and woody, with leather, tobacco, hay and dried fruit over a grassy cane core, finishing on chocolate, vanilla and coffee. The wood and leather are assertive for the modest strength, giving an intensity that belies the 42%, and the style stays firmly dry rather than sweet in keeping with the AOC. Certified unsweetened, it works as a characterful sipper and a sturdy base for an Old Fashioned.
