Velier Uitvlugt Modified GS 1996

An Uitvlugt from Velier, drawn off the refined Savalle column that gave the closed Uitvlugt estate its clean, fruity reputation. Distilled in 1996 and tropically aged for eighteen years in Guyana, this is one of the bottlings that built Velier's standing in old Demerara.

Years in the Caribbean heat give it a deep, oily body, with creamy coconut, caramel and vanilla layered over wood spice and dried fruit. Bottled unsweetened at 57.2%, it is intense but beautifully integrated, the strength folded into the richness rather than standing apart. Uitvlugt is a lost-estate marque now made only by recreation, which gives bottlings like this a finite, irreplaceable quality on top of their depth. A benchmark tropical Demerara for those who already know the style.
