A Guatemalan solera rum made from sugar-cane honey rather than molasses, soft and easygoing with caramel, vanilla and woody, smoky notes drifting into plum, comparatively restrained in sweetness and gentle at 40%.
Description
Botran Reserva 15 is a Guatemalan rum from the country's large distillery, made from sugar-cane honey rather than molasses and built in a solera system where older and younger rums are blended over time. As with any solera, the figure on the label is a system reference rather than a guaranteed minimum age, so it is best read as a solera blend.
The profile is classic soft Latin rum: caramel, vanilla and gentle wood, with a smoky, plummy edge on the finish. The cane-honey base and column distillation keep the spirit light and smooth, and while it carries the rounded character of the style, it is comparatively restrained in sweetness, which gives it a little more definition than the sweetest of its neighbours. At an easy 40% it works as a no-fuss sipper or a mixer, a comfortable, good-value bottle for relaxed drinking rather than a big, complex statement.
