An official Glenfarclas, a 17 year old, 2000, at 60.1%. A rich, sherried malt of date, fig and a warm cinnamon, with dried fruit, fig and walnut from the cask. Licensed in 1836 and bought by John Grant in 1865, at Ballindalloch. Run by six generations of the Grant family since 1865, one of Scotch’s last independents. This is a rich Speyside malt of dried fruit and nut.

Description

This official Glenfarclas, a 17 year old, from 2000, cask 396, at 60.1%, 615 bottles in all. Glenfarclas is a Speyside single malt drawn from the largest, direct fired stills in Speyside. Its water rises from the granite of Ben Rinnes, above the distillery at Ballindalloch. It holds some sixty eight thousand casks on site in dunnage warehouses, with stock from every year since 1953.

It was distilled to a rich, generous cut, for a weighty, nutty spirit the sherry then deepens. An Oloroso sherry cask held it, drawing the rich spirit on over the years. At oxidative maturity aldehydes lend a nutty edge while ellagitannins draw a drying, structured grip across the fruit. Long ageing turns the fresh notes towards date, prune and a dark, bittersweet chocolate. Active wood drives the maturation, the cask deep in the malt. Years in oak deepen the spirit to a darker gold, the body growing rounder and more resinous with time.

At 60.1%, undiluted, it is dark and full. Raisin, chocolate and a warm spice, with dried fruit, fig and walnut from the cask. A dark chocolate and a soft oak give it weight. The finish is long, rich and spiced. This is Glenfarclas's deep, fruity Speyside style.
