An official Glenfarclas, a 20 year old, 1999, at 55.2%. A rich, sherried malt of date, fig and a warm cinnamon. The house behind the 105, one of the first cask strength malts, from 1968. Its water rises from the granite of Ben Rinnes, above Ballindalloch. It holds tens of thousands of casks on site, with stock from every year since 1953. This is the family sherry malt of Ballindalloch.

Description

Glenfarclas from the distillery, a 20 year old, from 1999, cask 7062, at 55.2%, 635 bottles in all. Glenfarclas is a Speyside single malt from Ballindalloch, in the heart of Speyside. Its water rises from the granite of Ben Rinnes, above the distillery at Ballindalloch. Its six stills are the largest in Speyside and among the very few still fired directly, now by gas.

Worked unhurried through the stillhouse, giving a deep, full bodied Speyside spirit. It rested in ex-Bourbon oak, oak lactones lending a creamy vanilla. Through oxidative maturity the esters concentrate, the orchard notes turning to raisin, fig and a dark chocolate. The full spirit deepens with time, the cask drawing out its darker register. The cool, slow dunnage ageing loses little to evaporation, the spirit holding its depth. Long ageing turns the fresh notes towards date, prune and a dark, bittersweet chocolate.

At a natural 55.2% it is full and rich. Baked apple, honey and a dark chocolate, lifted by a sweet oak. Beneath it run dried fruit, dark sugar and a warm spice. The close is rich and dark, fruit over a warm spice. This is a Speyside single malt of real standing.
