Description
This Glendronach was bottled by La Maison du Whisky, a 24 year old, distilled in 1993, from cask 401, at 52.4%, a festival cask. Glendronach is a deep, dark Highland malt of dried fruit, chocolate and spice. By 1862 it had grown into the largest duty paying distillery in the Highlands. It joined William Teacher and Sons in 1960 and became a core malt of the Teacher's blend.
The spirit was distilled to a rich, generous cut, for a weighty, full spirit the sherry casks then deepen. Maturation came in an Oloroso sherry butt, layered over the full Glendronach make. At this evaporative stage ellagitannins lend structure while oxidation builds a richer raisin and treacle. The casks are picked closely, the wood matched to the rich Glendronach make. Maturation runs slow and even in the traditional dunnage warehouses on the Forgue site. Years in oak deepen the spirit to a darker gold, the body growing rounder and more resinous with time.
At 52.4%, undiluted, it is dark and full. A rich, sherried sweetness, with dried fruit, fig and walnut from the cask. It is full and fruity, the spirit carrying the cask. The finish is rounded, dark and spiced. This is Glendronach's deep, fruity Highland style.
