Description
A 26 year old Glendronach from La Maison du Whisky, distilled in 1993, from cask 6602, at 46.5%, one of 740 bottles. Glendronach is a Highland single malt whose founder was an early champion of sherry cask maturation. It was mothballed in 1996 and lay silent until production resumed in 2002. It was founded in 1826 by James Allardice, said to be the second man in Scotland to take a licence after the Excise Act of 1823.
It was distilled in copper pot stills, building a deep malt of dried fruit and dark sugar. A Pedro Ximenez sherry puncheon held it, drawing the rich spirit on over the years. In the oxidative, evaporative years the spirit concentrates to dried fruit, dark chocolate and a waxy, resinous depth. The wood frames the spirit without ever stripping the full Highland body. Vanillin and oak lactones from the wood lend vanilla and a soft coconut over the fruit. Years in oak deepen the spirit to a darker gold, the body growing rounder and more resinous with time.
Reduced to 46.5%, it is mellow and sweet. Fig, walnut and a bittersweet chocolate, with raisin, date and treacle from the cask. Dried fruit and a treacle sit behind the spice. It finishes long, full and fruity. This is a dark, fruity Highland single malt.
