Description
This Glen Scotia was bottled by A. Gillies and Co, a 12 year old, bottled at 54%. Glen Scotia is a salty, oily Campbeltown malt from the west coast of Scotland. It is one of only three working distilleries left in Campbeltown, with Springbank and Glengyle.
It was distilled slow for the salty, oily Glen Scotia style, building a maritime character of sea salt and oil. It was matured in refill ex-Bourbon oak, a soft vanilla beneath the coastal spirit. Integration folds eugenol (clove) and vanillin (vanilla) into the malt, the body oilier and the salt softer. A long ferment gives a fruity make that ages with a coastal, oily grace. Campbeltown, the Wee Toon, once held some thirty distilleries and was the whisky capital of the world. The Campbeltown style is oily and salted, the cask deepening it over the years. Maturation in the Campbeltown warehouses, by the sea, lends a coastal edge.
At a natural 54% it is full and oily. Citrus, salt and a soft vanilla, with a soft vanilla from the oak. The mouthfeel is oily, the fruit carried on a briny body. Citrus, salt and a soft oak see out the finish. This is the oily, salted malt of the Wee Toon.
