Description
Glen Scotia from the distillery, a 5 year old, at 40%. Glen Scotia is a Campbeltown single malt, one of only three distilleries left in the old whisky capital. It has been owned by the Loch Lomond Group since the 1990s, after many changes of hands.
The spirit was drawn off the stills after a long ferment for a fruity, briny spirit, for an oily spirit with a coastal, salted edge. It was matured in refill ex-Bourbon oak, a soft vanilla beneath the coastal spirit. At an extractive age eugenol lends a clove note and lactones a coconut, the spirit fresh, oily and coastal. Maturation in the Campbeltown warehouses, by the sea, lends a coastal edge. It was founded in 1832 as Scotia, one of the survivors of Campbeltown's Victorian whisky boom. A gentle maturation suits the oily make, the sea salt and toffee growing with time. Crosshill Loch water and a long ferment give the oily, coastal Glen Scotia make.
Bottled at 40%, it is rounded. Sea salt, citrus and a salted toffee, with a soft vanilla from the oak. Beneath it run citrus, salt and a soft oil. The finish is long, oily and salted. This is Glen Scotia's coastal, briny Campbeltown style.
