Description
A Ballechin of a 9 year old chosen by the Paris house La Maison du Whisky, distilled in 2014, from cask 492, bottled at 58.4%, one of 225 bottles. Ballechin is the heavily peated single malt from Edradour, the tiny farm distillery at Pitlochry. It once supplied blends such as House of Lords and King's Ransom.
Distilled from heavily peated malt in tiny copper stills and worm tubs, giving a rich, peated Highland spirit. First fill bourbon gave a fuller vanilla and a touch of coconut from the lactones. Young and extractive, the cask sheds vanillin (vanilla) and toasted sugars (caramel) beneath the heavy smoke. The cool Highland air of the glen gives a slow, even maturation in the small Edradour warehouses. Ben Vrackie water and a long ferment give the rich Edradour make. Under Signatory the range has grown to a wide run of sherry and wine cask bottlings. The full bodied spirit shows the cask clearly, the sherry and oak to the fore.
Bottled at a cask strength 58.4%, it is rich. Peat smoke, dried fruit and a nutty oil, with a soft vanilla from the oak. A dried fruit and a tarry oak give it depth. The finish runs long, smoky and warming. This is the smoky side of tiny Edradour.
