Description
Ballechin from the distillery, a 10 year old, from 2010, cask 901-906, at 57.8%, 493 bottles in all. Ballechin is the peated expression of Edradour, named after a long lost peated farm distillery nearby. A 2018 expansion added a second still house, the production still small and traditional.
The spirit was run through the small stills, the peat smoke carried into a rich, oily make, building the rich, peated Ballechin style. It rested in ex-Bourbon oak, oak lactones lending vanilla and a little coconut. Integration folds eugenol (clove) and vanillin (vanilla) into the smoky malt, the body fuller and oilier. Refill oak lets the rich, oily Edradour character lead the way. Signatory's wide cask range gives the small distillery an unusual variety of finishes. Its peated make, Ballechin, is named after a long extinct peated farm distillery a few miles away. Ballechin was first distilled in 2003, the malt peated to around fifty parts per million.
At a hearty 57.8% it carries real weight. A smoky, oily sweetness, with a soft vanilla from the oak. It is rich and smoky, the oily spirit shining through. The finish is long, smoky and gently spiced. This is a peated Highland single malt of real weight.
