Description
An official release of Ballechin, a 13 year old, from 2010, cask 803, at 48.2%. Ballechin is Edradour's heavily peated malt, smoke laid over a rich, oily Highland spirit. A 2018 expansion added a second still house, the production still small and traditional.
Distilled slowly from peated malt in the old farm stillhouse, the worm tubs lending weight to the smoke. It rested in ex-Bourbon oak, oak lactones lending vanilla and a little coconut. Through integration spirit and wood marry, vanillin settling into vanilla as the peat smoke softens to a mellow, oily reek. Maturation in the dunnage warehouses at Pitlochry is slow and steady. It once supplied blends such as House of Lords and King's Ransom. It was bought in 2002 by Andrew Symington of the independent bottler Signatory Vintage. A gentle maturation suits the oily make, the nutty richness growing with time.
At a natural 48.2% it is full and oily. A smoky, fruity richness, with a soft vanilla from the oak. The mouthfeel is thick and oily, the smoke on a creamy body. The close is oily and smoky, fruit over a tarry oak. This is a peated Highland single malt of real weight.
