Description
An 18 year old Ballechin, a distillery bottling, from 2004, cask 202, at 49.7%, 257 bottles in all. Ballechin is a peated Highland single malt from Edradour, owned by Signatory Vintage. It once supplied blends such as House of Lords and King's Ransom.
It was made from malt peated to around fifty parts per million in the tiny stills, building the rich, peated Ballechin style. Finished in a Port cask, the wood building over the oily, full bodied spirit. At oxidative maturity aldehydes lend a nutty edge and ellagitannins a drying grip, the peat smoke mellowing. A gentle maturation suits the oily make, the nutty richness growing with time. Years in oak round the spirit, the dried fruit and chocolate deepening over the oily core. The full bodied spirit shows the cask clearly, the sherry and oak to the fore. A small distillery and a hands on approach shape every cask by hand.
At a hearty 49.7% it carries real weight. A rich smoke over dried fruit and chocolate, with red berry, plum and a dry spice from the cask. The mouthfeel is thick and oily, the smoke on a creamy body. The finish is long, smoky and gently spiced. This is Ballechin's heavily peated, oily style.
