Description
The bottler Malts of Scotland bottled this Clynelish, a 40 year old, distilled in 1982, from cask MoS 22038, bottled at 48.9%, one of 145 bottles. Clynelish makes the celebrated waxy, oily Highland malt on the far north east coast at Brora. Most of its make goes to blending, with a fourteen year old the flagship single malt.
The spirit was drawn off three wash and three spirit stills, for the famous waxy texture at its heart. It was matured in refill ex-Bourbon oak, vanilla and honey behind the wax. Ethereal and old, decades draw the malt to a waxy, tropical delicacy of sotolon, beeswax and polished oak. Clynelish wax and a maritime salt run through the maturing spirit. Its waxy character, a candle wax and beeswax texture, is prized above almost any other by blenders. Vanillin and oak lactones from the wood lend vanilla and coconut over the wax. The distillery was built in 1967 next to the original Clynelish of 1819, which was renamed Brora and later closed.
Bottled at a cask strength 48.9%, it is rich. The famous wax over lemon and orange, with a soft vanilla from the oak. Soft citrus and a honeyed wax sit behind the cask. The finish is long, waxy and citrussy. This is the cult waxy malt of Brora.
