An official Caperdonich, a 16 year old, 1988, at 55.8%. Tropical fruit, wax and a creamy oat run through it. The distillery was demolished in 2011 to expand a coppersmith’s works. It was built as Glen Grant No.2 in 1898 and closed in 2002. With the distillery gone, every bottle is from a finite, dwindling stock. This is a finite single malt from a lost Speyside distillery.

Description
A 16 year old Caperdonich, a distillery release, from 1988, cask Batch CD 16 001, at 55.8%. Caperdonich was the quiet sister of Glen Grant, a Rothes distillery now demolished. Its character was close to Glen Grant but its own, less green apple, more cream, pear and mint.
The spirit was run through the distillery's tall copper stills, for the light, creamy, fruity make Caperdonich is known for. An American oak cask shaped it, soft and creamy beneath the fruit. At oxidative maturity aldehydes and esters lend tropical fruit while ellagitannins add a drying, structured grip. Refill oak lets the soft, fruity Caperdonich character lead the way. It closed in 1902 after the Pattison crash, lying silent for over sixty years. It was extended to four stills in 1967, run by only a couple of workers. Caperdonich leaned to cream, pear and mint where Glen Grant showed green apple. Closed in 2002 and later demolished, its profile is fixed for good.
At a natural 55.8% it is full and oily. Apple, pear and a soft honey, with a soft vanilla from the oak. Mango, pear and a soft vanilla fill the middle. The finish is long, fruity and waxy. This is a single malt from a silent Speyside distillery.
