Description
Single malt Tormore, an independent Gordon & MacPhail bottling, a 30 year old from 1991, drawn from cask 15389 and bottled at 48.5%. Only 132 bottles were released. Tormore was opened in 1960 on the A95 in the heart of Speyside, and it is now owned by Elixir Distillers. Water comes from the Achvochkie Burn, flowing off the granite hills above.
Distilled in swan neck stills fitted with purifiers, on soft Achvochkie Burn water, giving the structured, nutty Speyside spirit. A sherry butt held it, the wood lending raisin and walnut. At this great age the malt is full and waxy, the nut deep and the oak polished. A patient maturation suits the light, nutty Tormore character. Heat recovery condensers and sub coolers run alongside the purifier stills. The soft water runs through heather and peat and granite before reaching the distillery.
At a hearty 48.5% it carries real weight. Sherried dried fruit and a nutty edge come through, and the refill oak lending honey and vanilla runs under green apple, nut and a soft spice. It is fine and nutty, the fruit and oak well matched. A long, nutty finish carries a citrus lift. This is a light, almond edged Speyside single malt.
