Description
A Tormore single malt, selected and bottled by Best Dram, a 9 year old release from 2011, drawn from cask 800127 and bottled at 58.1%. The outturn was 244 bottles. Set in Speyside, near the Cairngorms, Tormore has distilled since 1960. The distillery is sometimes called the white cathedral of Speyside for its grand design.
Distilled on soft Speyside water through purifier stills, building the firm, clean Tormore style. Maturation in a fortified or wine cask lent red fruit and spice. Still young, the malt is light and nutty with a citrus lift. The slow loss of the angel's share concentrates the nutty, citrussy core over time. For most of its life its spirit vanished quietly into blends rather than into bottles of its own. Elixir Distillers bought Tormore in 2022 and are reviving it as a single malt brand. Most of the spirit matures off site, much of it in refill ex-Bourbon wood.
At a full 58.1% it is intense yet nutty. The Port cask adds plum and red berry, and apple, citrus and a soft almond meet honeyed oak sweetness underneath. Soft orchard fruit and nut sit behind the sweetness. The close is clean, nut over orchard fruit. This is a clean, citrussy Speyside single malt.
