Description
A Ledaig single malt, drawn and bottled by La Maison du Whisky, a 10 year old island malt from 2004, drawn from cask 900179 and bottled at 60.4%. Only 588 bottles were released. Ledaig is the peated malt made at Tobermory on Mull, a distillery founded as Ledaig in 1798. The stills carry boil bulbs and an S shaped kink in the lyne arms, which raises reflux.
Run through the distillery's boil ball stills from peated barley, to build the medicinal, briny Ledaig character. Maturation in sherry laid dried fruit over the peat. Still young, it is smoky and briny with a sweet lift. Peat smoke and active oak settle together over the years, the smoke softening as the fruit deepens. Water is drawn from a private hill loch, the Gearr Abhainn, above the town. Its painted home town gives the unpeated malt its name. A rare, more heavily peated make has appeared under the name Iona, after a neighbouring isle.
At a natural 60.4% it is bold and full. Soot, sea salt and a sweet fruit, and the Oloroso gives dried fruit and a toasted nuttiness. Beneath the smoke run brine, tar and a sweet fruit. The close is long, smoke over a sweet fruit. This is the peated island malt of Mull.
