Description

Bottled by casQueteers, this Ledaig, a 26 year old release from 1993, drawn from cask 243 and bottled at 48.4%. Ledaig is the heavily peated single malt of Tobermory distillery, the only distillery on the Isle of Mull, founded in 1798. Burn Stewart revived the distillery in 1993, and Distell of South Africa bought it in 2013.

The spirit was drawn off stills with their S shaped lyne arms, from peated malt, for a heavily peated island spirit. Ex-Bourbon casks held it, soft oak that lets the peat lead. At this age it is mellow and oily, the smoke folded into a rich body. Sea air works into the island maturation, lending Ledaig its briny, coastal edge. The distillery was refurbished and its stills renewed between 2017 and 2019. Mull's maritime climate works into the maturing casks over the years. It is one of the oldest commercial distilleries in Scotland still working. Tobermory has distilled in the island's harbour town since 1798.

At its natural 48.4% it is concentrated. A sooty smoke with tar and brine, and the refill bourbon lends a quiet vanilla. The texture is oily, the smoke threaded with sea salt. A long, ashy finish ends on sea salt. This is Ledaig's smoky, maritime single malt.
