Description
A Teaninich single malt, released by Elixir Distillers, an 11 year old Highland malt from 2008, drawn from cask 715790 and bottled at 60.4%. The outturn was 313 bottles. Teaninich was founded in 1817 by Captain Hugh Munro in Easter Ross, north of Inverness; it is a key malt of Johnnie Walker. It stands near Dalmore and Glenmorangie in the Cromarty Firth country.
The spirit was made from a mash filter wort for a clean, grassy spirit, for a clean, oily make of real freshness. It was matured in refill ex-Bourbon oak, lending honey and vanilla. Still young, the malt is grassy and oily with a citrus lift. The cool Highland climate gives a slow, even maturation over the years. A 2013 expansion added a new six still house, more than doubling capacity. Most casks are refill ex-Bourbon, which lets the grassy spirit show through. Captain Hugh Munro built the distillery to give his tenants' barley a buyer.
Undiluted at 60.4%, it is layered. Vanilla and a light cream from the barrel, with citrus, cut grass and a waxy lift. It is fresh and clean, the green spirit shining through. It finishes clean, fresh and grassy. This is the green, waxy malt of Alness.
