Description
Best Dram selected this Teaninich, aged 15 year old from 2008, drawn from cask 715014 and bottled at 51.4%. Only 304 bottles were released. Set at Alness in Easter Ross, Teaninich has distilled since 1817. In 1887 it became the first distillery north of Inverness with electricity and a telephone.
It was worked through the distillery's stills from a very clear wort, for the light, grassy, oily make Teaninich is known for. Maturation in a sherry cask laid dried fruit over the grassy malt. Around the mid teens the malt gains a fuller, oilier body over the grass. The slow loss of the angel's share concentrates the grassy, waxy core over time. That ultra clear wort is the source of Teaninich's fragrant, green tea grassiness. Teaninich Castle nearby, once the family seat, is now a hotel and restaurant. Robert Innes Cameron, an Elgin blender, became sole owner in 1904.
Undiluted at 51.4%, it is layered. The Amontillado adds a dry, nutty, almond edge, and a fresh, oily grassiness meet a quiet vanilla from the refill oak. Beneath it run cut grass, citrus and a soft wax. It finishes clean, fresh and grassy. This is a light, grassy Highland single malt.
