Description
Single malt Teaninich, an independent Berry Bros & Rudd bottling, aged 11 year old from 2007, drawn from cask 702605 and bottled at 55.9%. Teaninich was founded in 1817 by a Napoleonic veteran in the northern Highlands at Alness, and it is rarely seen as a single malt in its own right. In 1887 it became the first distillery north of Inverness with electricity and a telephone.
The spirit was run from a clear wort through the distillery's tall stills, to build a clean, waxy, grassy character. A refill American oak cask held it, keeping the green character to the fore. Younger here, it keeps a clean, grassy freshness over a waxy texture. The light, oily make takes cask character well across maturation. A hammer mill and mash filter, installed in 2000, replaced the traditional mash tun. That ultra clear wort is the source of Teaninich's fragrant, green tea grassiness. Teaninich Castle nearby, once the family seat, is now a hotel and restaurant.
At its natural 55.9% it is concentrated. A grassy, waxy freshness sit alongside soft vanilla and honey from the cask. A green tea and a lemon note lift it. It finishes clean, fresh and grassy. This is the green tea malt of Easter Ross.
