Tamdhu Distinction

An official Tamdhu single malt and bottled at 48%. Tamdhu was founded in 1897 by the Spey at Knockando; it is famed for its sherry cask maturation. Mothballed in 2010, the distillery was revived by Ian Macleod, who relaunched the single malt in 2013.

It was drawn off copper pot stills fed by the Tamdhu Spring, for the full, fruity make that suits sherry maturation. An Oloroso sherry cask wrapped the malt in dried fruit and a nutty depth. Without an age statement, the malt is rich, fruity and sherried. Spanish and American oak sherry casks build the layered Tamdhu profile. For decades its malt fed blends such as the Famous Grouse and Cutty Sark. Mothballed in 2010, the distillery was revived by Ian Macleod and relaunched in 2013. Sherry casks, both Spanish and American oak, define the modern Tamdhu. The name Tamdhu is Gaelic for little dark hill, and the architect was Charles Doig. The River Spey runs past the distillery on its way to the Moray coast.

At its natural 48% it is concentrated. The Oloroso brings fig, raisin and a gentle ginger. A dried fruit and a nutty oak give it real depth. Fig, raisin and oak see out a long finish. This is a dried fruit rich Speyside malt.
