Description
This official Tamdhu single malt, drawn from cask Batch 008 and bottled at 55.8%. Tamdhu was founded in 1897 at Knockando on the River Spey; it is famed for its sherry cask maturation. Under Ian Macleod it is matured chiefly in sherry seasoned Spanish and American oak.
It was worked through onion stills for a rich Speyside spirit, then filled into sherry seasoned casks, the heart of the Tamdhu style. A sherry butt held it, the wood lending raisin and walnut. No age is given, but the sherried depth points to good years in oak. Refill oak lets the fruity distillery character lead beneath the sherry. The Spey valley's cool air gives a slow, even maturation in the warehouses. Tamdhu was built in 1897 by a consortium of blenders led by William Grant. The arrival of the Strathspey railway in the 1860s made the distillery possible. For decades its malt fed blends such as the Famous Grouse and Cutty Sark.
At cask strength 55.8% it is rich and full. The Oloroso brings raisin, orchard fruit and a warm spice. Soft orchard fruit and raisin sit behind the spice. Raisin and a warm ginger draw out the close. This is Tamdhu's classic sherried Speyside style.
