Description
An official Talisker single malt, a 30 year old and bottled at 45.8%. The outturn was 2964 bottles. Talisker, founded in 1830 by the MacAskill brothers by Loch Harport, beneath the Cuillin hills, is a Diageo Classic Malt. The tall wash stills carry U shaped lyne arms with purifier pipes, and the spirit runs into worm tubs.
It was drawn off stills whose looped lyne arms and worm tubs build a rich, oily spirit, from peated malt, for a smoky, coastal spirit with a chilli kick. Ex-Bourbon casks held the spirit, soft oak that lets the peat and pepper lead. Decades leave it deep and oxidative, mellow smoke and tropical fruit with a faint brine. Coastal warehousing gives the malt its mineral, sea spray lift. The unusual two wash and three spirit still set up is a relic of triple distillation, dropped in 1928. An old visitors book records guests calling since the turn of the last century.
At 45.8% it is balanced and peppery. A maritime smoke with a peppery bite sit over a gentle vanilla under the smoke. A maritime salt and a chilli warmth give it real punch. The finish is deep, oily and peppery. This is the maritime malt made by the sea on Skye.
