Description
An official Talisker single malt, a 27 year old release from 1985 and bottled at 56.1%. 3000 bottles in all. Established in 1830 by Loch Harport, beneath the Cuillin hills, Talisker is the maritime malt of Skye. Talisker is made by the sea, its character drawn from the wild Skye coast.
It was drawn off stills whose looped lyne arms and worm tubs build a rich, oily spirit, from peated malt, for a smoky, coastal spirit with a chilli kick. An ex-Bourbon barrel shaped it, gentle American oak under the smoke. Past twenty years the spirit turns deep and oily while keeping its smoky edge. Coastal warehousing gives the malt its mineral, sea spray lift. The unusual two wash and three spirit still set up is a relic of triple distillation, dropped in 1928. An old visitors book records guests calling since the turn of the last century. Medium peated malt from Glen Ord gives the smoke, the water from the Hawk Hill springs.
At its natural 56.1% it is rich and peppery. A smoky, briny depth with a chilli catch sit over a gentle vanilla under the smoke. It is rich and smoky, the brine and oak well matched. A long, briny finish ends on black pepper. This is the wild maritime malt of Skye.
