Description
Single grain Strathclyde, an independent The Caskhound bottling, a 30 year old grain whisky from 1993, drawn from cask 243306 and bottled at 50.1%. The outturn was 167 bottles. Strathclyde, built in 1927 in the heart of Glasgow, is a Glasgow grain distillery. Strathclyde stands on the site of an old cotton mill in the Gorbals.
Distilled in column stills for a light, clean grain spirit, building the light Glasgow grain style. A sherry cask wrapped the sweet grain in dried fruit and a nutty depth. Beyond twenty five years the grain grows deep and oily, coconut, butterscotch and crème brûlée over polished oak. Continuous column distillation gives a light, clean spirit, so the cask drives much of the flavour. Decades in ex-Bourbon wood turn light grain into a rich, oily whisky. Strathclyde is the only grain distillery in Glasgow, once one of Scotland's whisky cities. It was built by the gin distiller Seager Evans in 1927 on the site of an old cotton mill.
At its natural 50.1% it is concentrated. The Pedro Ximenez lends raisin, date and treacle over a sweet grain. Beneath it run coconut, vanilla and a soft oil. A sweet, coconut led finish lingers. This is an old Glasgow single grain whisky.
