Description
This Strathclyde was from the independent bottler Arranthony Moray, a 29 year old release from 1994 and bottled at 42.3%. 50 bottles in all. Set in the Gorbals, Glasgow, Strathclyde has made grain whisky since 1927. The malt distillery Kinclaith lived inside its walls from 1957 until 1975.
It was worked through continuous column stills from wheat, for the light, sweet grain spirit the distillery is known for. Maturation came in ex-Bourbon wood, with vanilla and crème brûlée. Past twenty five years the spirit turns oily and dessert sweet while staying clean. Long ageing turns light grain into a deep, oily, dessert sweet whisky. The continuous still gives a clean, high strength spirit that mellows with years. Strathclyde takes its name from the old region around Glasgow. Decades in ex-Bourbon wood turn light grain into a rich, oily whisky. Strathclyde is the only grain distillery in Glasgow, once one of Scotland's whisky cities.
At 42.3% it is smooth and sweet. The ex-Bourbon gives coconut, toffee and crème brûlée. Soft toffee and vanilla sit behind the sweetness. The close is soft, dessert sweet over oak. This is the light, sweet grain style of Strathclyde.
