Description
This is a Springbank single malt, chosen and bottled by Cadenhead's, an 11 year old release and bottled at 46%. Springbank is a Campbeltown distillery distilling since 1828, a family distillery that malts and bottles every drop on site. The whole process, malting included, is carried out by hand on the one site.
It was distilled two and a half times from lightly peated, floor malted malt, and slowly worm tub cooled. A refill American oak cask held it, keeping the distillery character to the fore. At a youthful age the make is lively, salty and full of character. The cool, damp Campbeltown air by the sea gives a slow, even maturation. Demand far outstrips the small output, and bottles are keenly chased. Springbank, Longrow and Hazelburn each show a different face of the one distillery. The open larch washbacks are a rare survival in modern Scotch. The distillery has become a place of pilgrimage for whisky enthusiasts.
Bottled at 46%, it is rounded. A vanilla and toffee sweetness meets an oily, maritime character with light peat. The mouthfeel is oily, the fruit carried on a salty body. A long finish smoulders on salt and oil. This is the flagship malt of old Campbeltown.
