Bottled by Gordon & MacPhail, this Royal Brackla, a 15 year old from 1991 and bottled at 46%. Royal Brackla, founded in 1812 by Captain William Fraser on the Cawdor Estate near Nairn, is the first Royal distillery in Scotch. Water for the make is drawn from the Cawdor Burn.

It was distilled on Cawdor Burn water in tall copper stills, for the fruity, elegant spirit Royal Brackla is known for. A sherry butt held it, the wood lending raisin and walnut. By this age the orchard fruit rounds into honey and a fuller spice. The unpeated make lets the wood and the fruit speak without smoke. The distillery sits on the Cawdor Estate, whose castle is tied to the legend of Macbeth. Captain William Fraser, an army man returned from India, built the distillery in 1812. Water for the make is drawn from the Cawdor Burn in the northern Highlands.

At 46% it is smooth and fruity. The Oloroso brings dried fruit, fig and a nutty depth, and green apple and a fragrant lift sit alongside a quiet vanilla from the refill oak. It is clean and elegant, the fragrant spirit shining through. A fruity, gently spiced finish lingers long. This is a Highland malt with a royal past.
