Description
Duncan Taylor bottled this Royal Brackla single malt, a 13 year old from 2006, drawn from cask 9327713 and bottled at 53.2%. 72 bottles in all. Founded in 1812 on the Earl of Cawdor's estate near Nairn, Royal Brackla is the King's Own Whisky. Captain Fraser, late of the army in India, shipped his spirit south to beat the local smugglers.
The spirit was made in copper pot stills after a long fermentation, for a fruity, honeyed make of real finesse. It was matured in refill ex-Bourbon oak, lending honey and vanilla. Past a decade the fruit deepens into honey, dried fruit and a warm spice. Sherry wood is central to the house style, lending dried fruit and a nutty depth. For generations the malt was a backbone of the Dewar's blends before its single malt revival. It is one of only three distilleries permitted to carry the Royal name in Scotch. Queen Victoria renewed the royal warrant in 1838, confirming its regal standing.
At a hearty 53.2% it carries real weight. Vanilla and a light cream from the barrel runs under a refined, fruity sweetness. A dried fruit and a gentle oak spice give it real depth. The finish runs honeyed, spiced and soft. This is a fragrant Highland single malt of real finesse.
