Description
This Royal Brackla, an official release, a 20 year old from 1998 and bottled at 52.9%. The outturn was 192 bottles. Royal Brackla was built in 1812 by Captain William Fraser on the Cawdor Estate near Nairn, and it became the first Scotch granted a royal warrant, by William IV in 1833. Water for the make is drawn from the Cawdor Burn.
It was distilled on Cawdor Burn water in tall copper stills, for the fruity, elegant spirit Royal Brackla is known for. Maturation in a sherry cask laid dried fruit over the elegant malt. Past seventeen years the spirit turns honeyed and full while keeping its elegance. The unpeated make lets the wood and the fruit speak without smoke. Owned today by John Dewar and Sons, part of Bacardi, it remains a quiet Highland name. Fraser shipped his spirit south to England to outpace the local smugglers of his day.
At 52.9%, undiluted, it is deep and honeyed. The Moscatel brings grape, honey and a floral sweetness, and green apple and a fragrant lift sit alongside a quiet vanilla from the refill oak. It is clean and elegant, the fragrant spirit shining through. It closes long, fruity and warming. This is a Highland malt with a royal past.
