Description
This official Old Pulteney single malt and bottled at 46%. Old Pulteney was opened in 1826 by James Henderson in Pulteneytown, Wick; it still distils beside the sea at Wick. The distillery closed in 1930 when Wick went dry, and reopened only in 1951.
It was worked through Pulteney's boil ball stills, fed by Loch Hempriggs, before long maturation by the sea drew in its coastal character. An Oloroso butt held it, sherry meeting the sea salt. No age is given, but the honeyed depth points to good years in oak. The spirit takes colour and sweetness slowly in the cool far north. The cool maritime climate is as much a part of the whisky as the cask. Honey, beeswax and sea salt are the threads that run through the range. The distillery has worn the title of the Maritime Malt for good reason. Wick built its fortune on herring and whisky, the silver and the gold of the north.
At 46% it is smooth and honeyed. The Oloroso brings salted dried fruit, fig and walnut, and a briny, oily edge sit alongside light vanilla from the refill oak. It is clean and bright, the coastal salt lifting the honey. Salt, honey and oak draw out the close. This is the salty, honeyed signature of Wick.
