This Old Pulteney, an official release,, a 21 year old and bottled at 46%. Pulteney, founded in 1826 by James Henderson in Pulteneytown, Wick, it has been the maritime malt of Caithness ever since. It is one of the last urban distilleries, set among the streets of Pulteneytown.

It was worked through Pulteney's boil ball stills, fed by Loch Hempriggs, before long maturation by the sea drew in its coastal character. An Oloroso sherry cask wrapped the malt in dried fruit and a nutty depth. Long ageing brings an oily depth, dried fruit and a mellow coastal salt. Maturation by the sea is central to the house style, the brine settling into the malt. Closed when Wick went dry in 1930, the distillery did not run again until 1951. Sea air works into the warehouses, a saline thread that marks the house style. For decades this was the most northerly distillery on the Scottish mainland.

At 46% it is soft, waxy and coastal. The Oloroso brings salted dried fruit, fig and walnut, and a coastal salinity meet light vanilla from the refill oak. Soft brine and orchard fruit sit behind the sweetness. A waxy, coastal finish lingers long. This is Old Pulteney's classic maritime character.
