Description
A 21 year old single cask Ardmore released by Adelphi Selection in 2018, distilled in 1996 and bottled at a notably high natural strength of 61.2%. Cask #149027 sits in a tight fill cluster with #149026 (Adelphi 2017) and #149022 (A.D. Rattray 2018), all three from the same warehouse run of 1996 Ardmore. The vintage falls inside the Allied Distillers period when nearly all production was channelled into Teacher's Highland Cream and single malt outturn came almost exclusively through independents. 236 bottles for the Netherlands.
Filled at 63.5% into a single ex Bourbon refill American oak cask in 1996, the spirit matured in dunnage at Kennethmont through the pre Beam Global era. The wash stills operated on direct coal firing during the distillation, the heating regime that defined every Ardmore vintage between 1898 and early 2001 and produced the heavier oily texture associated with the period. Twenty one years brought the strength to 61.2% with no chill filtration applied.
The high outturn strength tells the cask story: a tightly sealed barrel with limited evaporative loss across two decades. Refill American oak gives soft coconut and pine through cis whisky lactone, vanillin and syringaldehyde build a baked custard and light caramel layer. Coal era furfurals from direct flame distillation read as toasted oat and brown sugar. Apple and pear esters carry from the Kerry yeast component, with inland peat reading as heather smoke and earthy phenolic at integrated intensity.
