Description
A 21 year old single cask Ardmore released by Adelphi Selection in 2017, distilled in 1996 from a tight cluster of Adelphi held casks (#149026, #149027 and Rattray's #149022) all drawn from the same warehouse fill run. The vintage falls inside the Allied Distillers period that fed nearly all Ardmore production into Teacher's Highland Cream, with single malt outturn restricted almost entirely to independent bottlers like Adelphi. 236 bottles, bottled at 61% natural strength.
Filled at 63.5% into a single ex Bourbon refill American oak cask in 1996, the spirit matured in dunnage at Kennethmont through the long pre Beam Global window. Direct coal firing of the wash stills was still in operation during the 1996 distillation, producing the heavier oily mid palate that defines the period. Twenty one years brought the cask to 61% with no chill filtration applied at bottling.
A high natural strength after two decades indicates a tightly sealed cask with low evaporative loss. Refill American oak gives the classic Bourbon refill signature at this age: soft coconut and resinous pine from cis whisky lactone, vanillin and syringaldehyde building a baked custard register. Coal era Maillard products from direct flame distillation carry through as toasted oat and pastry crust. Apple and pear esters from the Kerry yeast component sit at the centre, with inland peat reading as heather smoke and dry leaf at moderate integrated intensity rather than dominant phenolic.
