Description
Distilled at Aberfeldy in 1993 and matured 12 years in a single ex Bourbon cask numbered LD 4001, bottled by Douglas Laing under the Douglas of Drumlanrig label at 49% for the Italian specialist trade. Douglas of Drumlanrig was an older Douglas Laing sub brand active in the late 1990s and 2000s, used for European specialist market releases and named after the historic Douglas family seat at Drumlanrig Castle in Dumfriesshire. The label has since been retired in favour of the modern Provenance and Old Particular ranges.
Long fermentation Aberfeldy spirit from the four still post expansion configuration, distilled in 1993 in the United Distillers ownership era of the distillery. Filled into a single ex Bourbon cask and aged 12 years at Douglas Laing's bonded warehouses. Bottled at 49% with reduced chill filtering, sitting at or near natural cask strength for the maturation period.
Twelve years in refill American oak builds a measured oak signature: vanillin from lignin breakdown at moderate levels, cis whisky lactones contributing soft coconut and dill, and furfural plus 5 hydroxymethylfurfural from hemicellulose providing the soft caramel and cereal layer. Aberfeldy's distillate character carries strongly at this age: medium chain ethyl esters (ethyl laurate, ethyl myristate) and heavier alcohols drive the heather honey and beeswax base, with the 49% bottling holding ester volatility on the nose and the oily texture forward on the palate.
