Description
Svenska Eldvatten was founded in 2011 by Tommy Andersen and Peter Sjögren, building a reputation in Scandinavia for cask strength single cask releases drawn from the major Speyside and Highland distilleries. The Raskatter series operates as one of the firm's themed lines for individual cask selections. This Glenrothes 15 Years Old 2008 emerges from a single Oloroso cask designated SE145, bottled in 2023 at 61.2% with 266 bottles directed into the German market.
Fifteen years in a first fill Oloroso butt at a final strength of 61.2% suggests the cask sat in low humidity conditions favouring water rather than alcohol evaporation. European oak's tannin contribution accumulates aggressively in this window, while the cask's residual oxidised sherry combines with lignin breakdown products (vanillin, syringaldehyde, eugenol) and hemicellulose furfural compounds. At sustained high strength, the cask's extractive load presses through more sharply than in softer reductions.
The nose opens with a coal gas note that signals heavy oxidative ageing in active sherry wood, layered over raisin, fig and polished oak. The palate runs dense and tannic at 61.2%: dark chocolate, dried prune and a savoury walnut underbelly, with the European oak's grip closing tight around the spirit. The finish is long and resinous, the cask still in active extraction mode with no slack in the wood's contribution.
