Description
Pōkeno Discovery is a New Zealand single malt from the Pōkeno distillery, located in the town of Pōkeno in the Waikato region of the North Island, southeast of Auckland. It’s positioned as an accessible core expression that introduces the distillery’s house style at 43% ABV, and it is commonly stocked through specialist whisky retail channels including European retailers, indicating clear export market presence alongside domestic availability.
The whisky is built from a three cask recipe of first fill ex Bourbon, Oloroso, and Pedro Ximénez maturation. First fill Bourbon casks contribute a high concentration of oak extractives such as vanillin and coconut leaning lactones, while the sherry casks broaden the profile through oxidised wine derived compounds and seasoned wood influence, typically increasing dried fruit, nutty tones, and darker sweetness. This is a deliberate “structure plus seasoning” approach rather than a single cask showcase.
Production is set up to preserve fruit driven spirit character before the cask work takes over, using long fermentation up to 80 hours and slow copper pot distillation, then maturing in a warm climate where the distillery reports an angels’ share up to around 9% per year. That combination accelerates cask integration and oak driven flavour development, helping Discovery show mature wood influence earlier in its life cycle than a typical cool climate maturation, while still retaining the distillery’s clean, ester forward base notes.
