Distilled on 21 March 2008 and bottled on 26 May 2021, this 13 year old Bushmills single malt was finished in Douro wine casks and released at 56.6 percent ABV as part of The Causeway Collection, with a limited outturn of approximately 720 bottles for the Australian market.
At this stage of its life, the whiskey is still structurally active. After more than a decade in wood, it has developed sufficient oak-derived framework and body to support further cask influence, while retaining enough alcohol strength and volatility to remain responsive to finishing. This balance is critical. Without that underlying structure, a wine cask would overwhelm the spirit. Without sufficient energy in the liquid, the finish would struggle to integrate. Here, the timing is deliberate.
The Douro wine cask finish builds on that foundation. Casks seasoned with fortified Douro wines carry concentrated phenolic compounds and wine-derived sugars that have already undergone oxidative handling. When the spirit enters these casks, it absorbs deeper fruit character and tannic structure rather than fresh, high-toned wine notes. The result is a shift toward red and dark fruit weight, with added grip and mid-palate density rather than sweetness alone.
On the nose, the whiskey opens with ripe red fruit, leaning toward blackberry, plum and dark currant, supported by subtle spice and underlying oak. The palate is bold and structured, with concentrated fruit, warm spice and controlled tannin framed by the elevated bottling strength. The alcohol carries flavour effectively without pushing heat to the foreground, allowing the wine influence to integrate rather than sit on top of the base spirit.
The finish is long and steady, with residual fruit depth and gentle spice tapering gradually rather than dropping away. This is a whiskey shaped by timing as much as by cask choice. The base spirit has been allowed to develop enough structure to take on additional complexity, while remaining energetic enough to translate that influence clearly.
