Description
Ron Canuto Superior is a column-distilled molasses rum from Ecuador's Zhumir distillery, aged seven years and bottled at a soft 40%. It is an uncomplicated, accessible rum in the mellow Spanish-leaning style, built more for easy drinking and mixing than for close study.
Matured in ex-bourbon oak, the nose shows honey, vanilla, butterscotch and dried fruit, while the palate brings vanilla and caramel with a spirity edge. The finish is on the short side, a little harsh, with burnt sugar and caramel. There is noticeable sweetness and a touch of nuttiness, but not a great deal of depth, and the alcohol can prickle despite the modest strength. This sits best as a soft, sweet everyday rum for mixed drinks, appealing to drinkers who like easygoing supermarket-style bottlings and are not chasing a long finish.
