A 6 year Madeira agricole from William Hinton, distilled from fresh cane juice and finished in port casks at 42%, dry and woody with port wine, dried fruit and red fruit over a spicy, nutty, peppery finish.
Description
William Hinton distils in Madeira, one of the rare places outside the French islands entitled to the term rhum agricole, working from fresh pressed sugar cane juice on a column still. This six year old takes that aged cane juice rum and finishes it in port casks, bottled at a sociable 42% and reading clearly drier than a sweet molasses rum of the same age.
The port cask sets the tone, layering white port, dried fruit and red fruit over the rum's woody base. The palate is dry and tannic with port wine, black tea and red fruit, and the finish turns spicy and nutty with black pepper and allspice. The cane juice backbone keeps it firm and vegetal rather than plush, so it sits alongside dry wine finished agricoles like Clement, offering a clear port signature at an easy strength for drinkers who want character without high proof.
