A young, edgy Madeira rum from William Hinton bottled by Danish house 1423 for a rum advent calendar, with wood, honey, caramel and a grassy, agricole leaning twist at 45%, best in a mixed drink.
Description
This William Hinton release was bottled by the Danish company 1423 World Class Spirits for its well known 24 Days of Rum advent calendar, a multi cask edition from the distillery on Madeira. Madeira is one of the few places outside the French islands permitted to use the agricole term, and this three year old leans in that direction, matured in ex bourbon oak and bottled at 45%.
At only three years it shows its youth. There is honey, fruit and vanilla on the nose with a grassy, agricole feel, but the palate turns spirit forward and spicy with overripe and dried fruit, and the warm, woody finish leaves the alcohol a little exposed and not fully knit together. Read honestly it is a young, experimental pour rather than a polished neat sipper, and most drinkers will get more from it in a mixed drink. It works as an affordable, curiosity driven taste of bold young Madeira rum for the adventurous.
