An unusually accessible full proof 1991 Velier Caroni at nineteen years and 61.7%, driven by vanilla, butterscotch, dried fruit and dark chocolate with only gentle tar, unsweetened yet naturally sweet-feeling.
Description
This Velier release is a 19-year blended Caroni from the 1991 vintage, bottled at a full 61.7% from the Genoa house that built the closed Trinidad distillery's legend. Where many Caroni lean hard into grime, this one is unusually approachable while still delivering the strength and depth collectors expect, and it is bottled additive-free.
The molasses spirit, aged in ex-bourbon oak, opens on raspberry, butterscotch, toasted notes and mace, then turns to prune, dried fruit, barrel and dark chocolate on the palate, with a finish of eucalyptus, smoky barrel and toast. The tar and industrial character are present but gentle, ceding ground to vanilla, caramel and fruit. Though unsweetened it feels naturally sweet and rounded, a drier yet generous Caroni that opens the legend to drinkers wary of heavy petrol and rubber.
