A 14 year TDL single cask from Valinch & Mallet behaving more like a soft Foursquare, vanilla, toffee, light fruit and gentle spice over a sweet, woody finish, certified unsweetened at 51.3% and easygoing rather than minty or funky.
Description
Valinch & Mallet, the independent bottler, selected this single cask of TDL Traditional Rum from the 2009 vintage, drawn at 14 years and bottled at cask strength, 51.3%, and certified unsweetened. TDL, Trinidad Distillers Limited, usually works in the light, fragrant column-still idiom, and this release leans into the softer, more approachable side of that style.
Matured in ex-bourbon oak, it sits closer to a gentle Barbados blend than to the minty, oily heavy Trinidad marks. Vanilla, honey and baking spice lead the aroma, with toffee, light fruit and a soft, almost syrupy sweetness on the palate, then burnt sugar and nougat over a woody finish. Despite the cask strength it drinks easily, the profile rounded and dessert-leaning rather than intense. Bottled dry, it offers the comfort of a soft, toffee-driven rum without the funk some expect from Trinidad, a relaxed, easy-drinking single cask for those who like their TDL light and gentle.
